As I mentioned previously, I’m obsessed with reading – especially about food. I find myself reading cookbooks like I would a novel! In my continual effort to share some old and new favorites, I’ve got two books and one magazine for you today.
French Feasts – Stephane Reynaud continues to amaze me. Not only does he have some of the most visually interesting cookbooks I’ve ever seen, but the recipes do a fantastic job of demystifying some very complex dishes. Where else would you find a book that explains (through etchings) the various methods for spinning wool, next to a recipe for his grandmother’s veal chops in a mushroom, bacon and onion cream sauce?! These 299 beloved recipes are the essence of French weekend fare and will quickly become a favorite in your home (it is in mine).

Pastry: Savory and Sweet – with the holidays around the corner, it makes sense to include what I consider an authoritative guide to pastry-making. This cookbook dispels the myth that making pastry is beyond reach for many cooks. As you would expect with Michel Roux, this book includes excellent recipes, imaginative combinations and very clear instructions. Each chapter is based on a particular dough and starts with a step-by-step technique spread. This has quickly become my go-to guide for pastry.

Donna Hay Magazine – every cover of this magazine has a serious drool factor. Donna Hay, an Australian-based author packs her magazine with simple recipes and beautiful photography. Now, I admit that it’s pretty expensive for a year subscription to this magazine (which only includes 6 issues), so I usually head over to my favorite bookstore and pick up a copy when I’m looking for inspiration.

I’m intrigued by both the cookbooks, especially the Michel Roux. Also, this is not the first time I’ve heard good things about Donna Hay’s magazine. I’m definitely going to take a look the next time I’m in a bookstore.
