The Urban Spork

EAT

Feed your hunger for great food with the scoop on some of Chicago’s notable food finds.  Great food isn’t always elaborate or expensive and there are plenty of options for satisfying an array of hunger pangs. The Urban Spork is always looking for new places to feed the beast, so recommendations are welcome!

Buenos Aires

Raisin Brioche Pastries

It was time for me to escape the cold weather of Chicago and head south – way south.  Actually, so far south that I’m currently traveling and eating my way through Buenos Aires.  What an amazing city!  I’ve been really impressed with the culinary scene which is heavily influenced not only by the surrounding countries, but also Spain and Italy.  I thought you might be interested in seeing some of the delicious eats I’ve been enjoying over the last few days – some of these will serve as inspiration for upcoming posts over the next few months.

Freshly Baked Bread

As you can imagine, the variety, quality and amount of meats and cheeses is outstanding!

Charcuterie Platter

Empanadas are at the top of my cooking list when I get home.  I’ve had several since I’ve been here – sweet or savory, these are delicious!

Ham & Cheese, Beef and Chicken Empanadas

I have to throw in some fruit and vegetables once in awhile – I can’t live on pastries, meat and cheese (or can I?)!

Farmers Market Stand

Stay tuned – I’m still eating and taking photos, so there will be more to come soon!

What in the World are Pupusas?!

About six weeks ago I would have said the same thing!  I was recently introduced to this simple, yet flavorful dish from El Salvador and can’t stop thinking about it. A pupusa is a thick flatbread made with masa (cornmeal dough) that is stuffed with a variety of ingredients including: cheese, pork meat/pork rind, loroco [...]

Mercat a la Planxa

With so many great options in and around Chicago it’s sometimes hard to stay on top of my “must try” list of new restaurants.  Friends have been raving about Mercat a la Planxa and their Catalan inspired food since it opened in the Spring of 2008.  While I  am a huge fan of tapas, I [...]
